❄️ Winter is well and truly upon us, and we have seen a huge influx of acute back pain in the last few weeks!
🌡 When faced with lower temperatures, a process called vasoconstriction occurs, which means that our blood vessels narrow.
Because essential organs such as the brain 🧠 and heart ❤️ need more blood, it leaves muscles, tendons and ligaments with less, and they grow stiff.
😨 The same occurs in the structures around your spine, which is why it is very common to experience more back pain in winter! 🥶
✅ Here are some easy ways to improve your health and prevent unnecessary back pain in winter:
🏃🏽♀️Stay active – even just gentle walking will help engage postural muscles of the spine, and get those stiff achey joints moving!
🚰 Stay hydrated! It is important to drink lots of water to assist in the hydration of tissue within the body, which will prevent some of those aches.
🔥 Keep warm – while this seems obvious, many of us (especially in Australia) don’t rug up properly, which makes our muscles more stiff!
🍕 Be mindful of what you are eating: foods such as processed meats, fried food, sugary drinks and white flour promotes inflammation in the body, which leads to more issues than just aches and pains.
🌞 Get as much natural light as possible. Natural light boosts Vitamin D, improves sleep and reduces depression.
