As the new year begins, many of us set resolutions to improve our health and well-being. While diet and exercise often take centre stage, there’s one aspect of health that’s often overlooked but just as important: your spine. At Wynyard Chiropractic, we believe that a healthy spine is the foundation for a healthier, more active you. Here are some simple yet impactful tips to prioritise your spinal health in 2025.
1. Get Moving
Regular movement is vital for maintaining a healthy spine. Prolonged sitting, whether at a desk or on the couch, can lead to stiffness, poor posture, and even chronic pain. Aim to:
- Stand and move every 30 minutes.
- Incorporate daily walks or light exercise into your routine.
- Try activities like Pilates or swimming, which promote mobility and strengthen spinal-supporting muscles.

2. Check Your Posture
Poor posture is the most common cause of back and neck pain. Start the year by assessing your daily habits:
- Ensure the top third of your computer screen is at or above your eye level.
- Use an adjustable chair with proper lumbar support or invest in an ergonomic setup for your workspace.
- Lift up tall from your belly, think wide across your chest and relax your shoulders down to help maintain a nice neutral posture while not straining yourself.

3. Lift Safely
Improper lifting techniques are a major cause of spinal injuries. Whether you’re at the gym or carrying groceries, remember to:
- Bend at your knees, not your waist.
- Keep the object close to your body.
- Avoid twisting while lifting.
4. Stay Hydrated

Did you know that the discs in your spine rely on water to maintain their cushioning properties? Staying hydrated helps keep your spine mobile and less prone to injury. Make it a habit to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Your minimum water intake per day is 0.035x your body weight e.g. 80kg body weight x 0.035 = 2.8 litres of water per day. Caffeinated and alcoholic drinks SUBTRACT from your daily water intake, so for every coffee, have an extra glass of water to balance it out!
5. Sleep Smarter
Your sleeping posture plays a crucial role in spinal health. Support your spine by:
- Sleeping on your back or side, not your stomach.
- Using a supportive pillow that keeps your head and neck aligned.
- Opting for a mattress that provides adequate support.
6. Prioritise Regular Chiropractic Care
A visit to your chiropractor can do wonders for your spinal health. Regular chiropractic check-ups can:
- Identify and address minor issues before they become major problems.
- Improve spinal mobility and overall function.
- Help you feel more balanced and aligned.
At Wynyard Chiropractic, we offer tailored chiropractic care that focuses on improving spinal movement, posture, and overall well-being. Whether you’re looking to address a specific issue or simply maintain your health, we’re here to support you.
