Did you know?
Back pain is one of the most burdensome physical conditions facing Australians and the prevalence of back pain in society is astonishing. The Institute of Health and Welfare estimates around 4 million Australians (16% of the population) have back problems.1 This has drastically increased due to Covid with 90.5% of Australians experiencing pain in the last 12 months. Of those people, 67.8% have experienced low back pain, 43% complained of neck pain, 34.9% experiencing tension headaches and 25.2% suffering from migraines.2
What impact is it having?
New pain is having a detrimental impact on quality of life; Over a third of Australians admit their pain causes physical and mental exhaustion, 52.7% are experiencing loss of sleep due to pain, and nearly 1 in 10 admitted to having problems with their partner because of their pain.2 It’s not just the physical ramifications that concern us; the number of Australian’s experiencing anxiety and depression has more than doubled in the last 12 months, from 20.7% to 47.3%.2
With the average Australian sitting for more than half their day3, this definitely doesn’t help! Research shows that nearly half (45.8%) of Australian adults are not exercising enough, and screen time such as TV and social media on phones has skyrocketed.2
Your back pain can be triggered by sedentary behaviour and inactivity. However, we don’t want your pain to stop you from being your most active self. As a nation of sports lovers and weekend warriors, it’s important that back pain from exercise injuries doesn’t stop you in your tracks.
What can we do about it?
